Waning Light and last light 2008

by Peter J. Crowley on December 31, 2008

December first late afternoon light casts shadow in Manchester New Hampshire.

Last light augmented by street lights Coventry Connecticut.
As the year of 2008 wanes I have no resolutions. Light the basis of my work fades, casts shadows not Black or White but shades of gray etched in silver, a negative reversed to a positive splashed onto paper. An individual emotion expressed shared yours, mine? A moment in time held still forever, for comment, commentary, passion, pleasure. The highlight sought the shadow found. A muse to hold for that moment before the light changes and wisps away the thought rushing on to the next new experience of creating another passionate observation of humanity of that moment, that rectangle, that reflection, that light. enjoy pjc

Sedona, After the Figure Studies there were Pink Jeeps

by Peter J. Crowley on December 27, 2008

Pink Jeep Tours Oh My there is something happening here
but I don’t know what it is, something going on here!

Pink jeeps tourist hats Pink Jeep tee shirts I had to abstract the scene
well further abstract the scene.

Sedona was a strange little artist community that had become a new age mini mall on steroids. Sedona seemed to be growing like an adobe [imitation] chia pet. New buildings and rotaries new tar construction, condo’s in the midst of all this natural beauty. Now I am not saying this in a negative way. I would hesitate to make snap judgements being a middle of the road level headed type, and I was only there for an hour or so. I found it to be cool, and visual all be it a bit trendy in downtown. But downtown was small [bet it's bigger now] and you could be back out in nature in a matter of minutes. Back to the artists and thinkers and Oak Canyon Creek. After the shoot we wandered briefly around for coffee post cards and images. Pink Jeeps oh my, how cool when I go back I want one for a prop. Then it was good bye to the model and back to old school Flagstaff more my speed. Well all for now. I’ll be keeping in the PINK for the rest of the year.

From the Window of a Train

by Peter J. Crowley on December 22, 2008

This image made chugging through the mountains heading North for Chicago. Bet it is snow covered now. Just so you know I shoot subjects other than people. There is a poem “From the Window of a Train” as yet unfinished I will post it later, perhaps around the new year as it is somewhat retrospective. ho ho ho pjc

Relationship to time space generations.

by Peter J. Crowley on December 19, 2008

August 27th 6:30am somewhere between Chicago and Erie I join this 72 year old train buff for coffee. He has been taking the train for travel most of his life and has been on almost every route Amtrak offers. Fully immersed in the culture of the rails yet still with a child like fascination of all that presents itself through the window. The clock on his hat works which I think is cool. We talk seeking similarities, finding he grew up in Connecticut and worked for The Bridgeport Post and other prints shops. Retired to Az. he is on his way to a sixty year reunion of workers from a YMCA camp. What a different look at relationships forged in the middle of the last century to relationships of today. Friendships nurtured over decades, working for the same company for your entire career. From seed to sapling to giant Oak drawing strength from your neighbors who’s parents were the Oaks that have lived next to you for generations. No genetically engineered acorns here just a forest of humanity sharing the the seasons of life.

December first I was back in Manchester New Hampshire to pick up work from The Darkroom Gallery. Last time it was Rita Mae’s for lunch, this trip we went to The Red Arrow Diner where the food was grand and the ambiance heartened you back to the middle of the last century when the The Diner was king. No placing your order to the plastic clown as you drove through, no here you spoke with a waitress who could suggest what you may like and still have room for a huge piece of pie. There is neon, Naugahyde stools to spin on shinny steal walls. The Red Arrow is a visual time machine for this artist whose work is very reflective, comparative to then and now, perhaps a bit romantic. Well maybe it is the end of the year or the snowy afternoon but a little pondering of life’s choices and the speed of today vs contemplation of the past, hope you enjoyed today’s passionate observations. enjoy pjc
