There is an old explanation of the wrong side of the track saying. It was supposed to have come from the railroads transversing the country from east to west and the wind generally was always prevailing from north to south, and the wind would carry the smoke and soot to the south side of the tracks and therefore those areas always were more polluted from this, thus you were on the wrong side of the tracks.
