Back in the Eighties

04.29.2008 by Peter J. Crowley // 4 Comments

In the Eighties I was not in Norwich but the State Hospital was a major employer for the region. Now left to lie in ruin all that is left is shadows of past life’s etched in the peeling paint and rotting wood. Broken windows and broken dreams/nightmares. Now the carcass of the Hospital is a political feeding ground for dreams of power, money, smoke and mirrors. The vultures circle and spin the truth out while the guards watch over the ghosts and the memories in the shadows of success or failure.

    Hi Peter,

It would be interesting to see a “then and now” rendition of the hospital. Time waits for no one and just like some old buildings here in my little town, I’m sure ghosts from the past cry out from the weather-beaten exterior and I can’t help but wonder what the yellowing wallpaper of yesteryear would have to say, were it able to speak. It seems that the beautiful architecture of days gone by has gone the way of the economy…right down the crapper.

Those old buildings are replete with photographic opportunities both inside and out. I was able to photograph a model inside an old, abandoned and severely dilapidated building and I really loved the juxtaposition of her soft form as it contrasted with the rough timbers, broken glass, filthy walls, and rundown walls and floors. I’ll have to see if I can find those photos again; another walk down memory lane.

    Good day!

    Mike

Peter, it’s a beautiful photograph. I love the shadows and lights, the left side with the empty big windows remind me of some greek antique city remnants which makes me think: has it always been like that? Men constructing big and beautiful, using it for a time, abandon it to the dust . But then, antique columns have lasted longer than these buildings will. Or not, but I guess people won’t give us the time to find out.
Here in Europe, these things are torn down pretty quickly, and you do not find so many ruins left to rot. (reminds me of a photo site for old coalmines in Germany, very esthetique, ((too much for my gusto)) if I find the link I’ll show you) Perhaps it is because we have less space?
    love

just if it interests you. I liked the somehow weird atmosphere.

Thanks for all the pictures you put out here, they are very very human. I love that.

    Peter,

“Guards watch over the ghosts” is a beautiful phrase. It defines the story that your haunting image
    implies.

    Best regards from Texas
    Alice
