Memorial Day, Then and Now

05.30.2008 by Peter J. Crowley // 6 Comments

Last weekend I went to visit a friend who I hadn’t seen for quite a while, since the eighties except for a brief rain soaked chat at a concert. She was having a Memorial day cook out. While there a couple of the guys and I were reflecting on youth through footwear. It wasn’t a long debate more of a look we are still there sitting side by side they posed their Black Converses and I shot this image. On the way home and today I thought about Memorial Day. I spoke with my daughter during the week and she could never remember Memorial Day being May 30th. It was always the Lite Beer, Gasoline, Consume and waste 3 day weekend. I’ve gotten very old. But what the hell it’s good for the economy, and it vanillarizes the day. Forget history so we and our children can be led down the spin highway to repeat it over and over heck it’s good for the economy. “Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it!” Ben Franklin. No answers, just questions. peace pjc

    Those Converse look so new:)

and your B Franklin quote made think of this quote from Goethe which I like so much: “All intelligent thoughts have already been thought; what is necessary is only to try to think them again.” So, if we study history and try to think a lot of intelligent thoughts again, then perhaps we will have a chance and not repeat over and over again the same errors?

the sneakers are new, well at least they haven’t been around since the eighties. If they had I would have shot them with a telephoto lens. LOL Good quote, I try to think intelligent [but sometimes playful] thoughts every day. enjoy pjc

The thing with the intelligent thoughts is very tricky, how can we know that all intelligent thoughts have been thought already, cause not every one of those thoughts has been written down or read…But this is again too much thinking for my poor little mind.

And also, perhaps intelligent thoughts, at least in the sense of what is commonly described as intelligent, are not always good for men. pffff. too much thinking here.

You are very brave, trying to think intelligent thoughts every day… I have trouble with it:) LOL
    have a wonderful Sunday,
    love
