Gray’s General Store Closes, Oldest General Store in America.

07.30.2012 by Peter J. Crowley // 1 Comment

My first visit to Gray’s was in 1982 while staying in Little Compton on vacation. I was transported back to my youth in Coventry, Clarence’s, Yeomen’s and George’s. Penny candy and pin ball. Old wood floors Nickle cokes at the counter hand mixed. Young on my bike and free.

These images made in 2007 on one of my visits back to the Adamsville section of Little Compton with friends who had not been here before. I was free to wander and photograph the history of the store. This is the post office mostly used for memory storage those days.

The roll top desk in the office was a grand old antique, the store was a museum of thought for those who see and imagine what came before. Like the center chimney in an old colonial Gray’s was the the center building block of community. I will miss my all to infrequent visits, to the past and the humanity, a cold pop on a hot summer afternoon. I’ll keep Gray’s in mind and images. Thanks to the seven generations who ran such a wonderful store.                                                                             enjoy pjc

Third Thursday Willimantic Ct. Street Festival

07.21.2012 by Peter J. Crowley // 2 Comments

Third Thursday Faces this one belongs to Frank Busse, the drummer in the Wild Bill Project, he also plays with King Cake and others. Thank you to the lead singer who extended a guitar solo so I could get the photo of the drummer always the hardest to see on a small stage.

Jack Collins here with the Electric Trains who were great as usual. Jack on the far west side of the stage created much less of a shadow problem than the other two members of this trio. The fact that Jack introduced me from the stage is a mere coincidence that his photo is here.

The Conga Player of this great Band who’s name I hope is correct, standing talking with a DJ from WECS who was doing the sound he wrote the name on a piece of paper “Saborengue” he got me a flyer and I stuffed it in my pocket only this morning did I realize it was in Spanish. They are playing in Rec. Park this afternoon. Any help at correcting my name of the group would be appreciated.

Of course there were cute hats and many smiles. To say a good time was had by all is a gross understatement.
