Outside my door at ArtSpace
Abstract prickers at Arnold’s
If I were a painter an Impressionist I’d be seeking to blend soft color into emotion. But I paint with light and on a rare occasion I may enhance the color with PS of a transparency. This image is from RT 87 in Lebanon Ct. There is a poem “Between Here and There” I have excerpted here but now the poem is complete and the illustrations will be done this week soon I will post it and decide if I am between here and there anymore.

Around the Lebanon Green

11.04.2009 by Peter J. Crowley // Leave a Comment

LebanonHistPeterMaxandNormanRockwell-D-54-09-29A Vincent van Gogh[ish] sheep and a Norman Rockwell[ish] cow graze outside The Lebanon Historical Society

“The farming town is best known for its role in the American Revolution, where it was a major base of American operations, and its historic town Green, which is one of the largest in the nation and the only one still used partially for agriculture.”
This and more history found on Wikipedia.
The painted farm Animals I first found on the green a while back at first I thought it sad that the real cows had been replaced by plywood sculpture but on looking closer I found that most had the history of Lebanon written on them and I thought what a creative way to involve children in a history lesson.
I’ll look back in the files to find the whole herd. History surrounds the Green with a few museums, farms and churches. A general Store and Town Hall at times you can stand in the middle of the Green squint your eyes and be back in the 1700’s.  The king Bee who was on this blog a few weeks back comes from a garden at one of the museums on the Green more on that later. [click on photo for King Bee] Well back to framing for my show. Hope to see someone from Lebanon at the opening.

PS there is a prize for the person who travels furthest to my opening.

What will we eat When the farmers are gone?

01.19.2009 by Peter J. Crowley // 2 Comments

In elementary school when I was a child we would sing a song with the refrain “the Farmer is the one who feeds us all” I think they still sing the song in school. But when I was 10 I knew the farmers. I played with their kids and sometimes helped with chores. But New England family farms are disappearing. In fact in the late fifties and early sixties I remember that some of my farm friends already had a second job to break even. As new developments encroached on pastures harvests decreased and the profit from produce dipped lower. The baby boomers and their new houses literally ate up the once fertile land. Now I’ll looking back fifty years and forward perhaps five. Hindsight is always twenty twenty and foresight is to often ruled by instant gratification/profit. Or put another way foresight is blind to tomorrow.

Now we have genetically engineered food and fewer Monarch butterflies, we have sick bees and Agra Business suing small farmers because the wind carried their genetically altered pollen into the farmers corn crop Copyright infringement. Hope the Honey Bees have a good Lawyer. Think you don’t eat genetically engineered food? Just read the labels at the market. Oh that’s right the USDA does not require labeling. ” The Farmer is the one who feeds us all?” Better living through Chemistry? enjoy pjc
