Summer of 2001 I taught Photo Philosophy on Whidbey Island. I joked that I would be teaching manual photography under the shadow of “Windows.” There were eight students all using film. Most I convinced to use manual one shot at a time. To see and think and see again as the camera sees. Learning to see and understand simplicity. I now own a digital camera [for quick color never decaffeinate] but use it on manual all the time yet it still makes adjustments I don’t want. I strive to make all the decisions, meter, compose in view finder almost never crop [this image is slightly cropped due to it being printed on post card paper] there is always an exception. One image at a time belongs to you. One hundred images blasted off in in a minute on auto everything belong to the camera. The decisive moment! My moment. My thoughts repeated, lived and not changing soon. LOL  My web designers spent a few hours last Wednesday figuring out some update problems on this word press site. As I post this morning I notice there are two more updates to add. Well I’ve rambled my thoughts on Photographic Art long enough. This from 2001, one of my four trips to Washington. 1998, 2008 by train. On this trip I taught a week long workshop on Whidbey Island at the Coupeville Art Center. Then visited my daughter in Olympia for a week. Image here made on transparency film. Transparency is a word you hear tossed around a lot. Seasons and Metaphors in my life

Film in the Summer of my vision. Charlie Sanborn called me the best available darkness photographer. The stage was always too dark yet the emotion shined through. The rectangle was alive, the moment was there. I perch somewhere between here and there balanced precariously looking back on freedom.


In March of 2001 I moved to Norwich and took a similar image in B+W here seven years later I start making digital images. Perhaps it is appropriate that I start using the new Artifiscal intelligence on a cold damp night for it is now winter in the season of photographic art. It is also winter in Amerika.       enjoy pjc
