Spring of ’72 or of Photographic Art

05.27.2010 by Peter J. Crowley // 4 Comments

1972 it was a long time ago. The spring of my visual journey one camera two lens a new 105mm and a train trip to NYC. Early weekend day stroll to Staten Island Ferry for a ride over and back. Still a student, yet the seeds are planted the road mapped out. Fertilized with Woodstock, The Vietnam War and social consciousness. The Passionate observer was born.

Already shooting and seeing full frame the rectangle was new composition and visual statements began.

The first years there was so much to see yet being new I sometimes would not shoot for I had not learned the nuance of subtle confrontation. Perhaps this quality taught me to be selective to pre edit what I commented on? Editing isn’t done anymore just make 100 images and post them all good doesn’t matter it is now speed and greed. But I digress to the future 1001101010. This day trip yielded less than a roll of film yet now 38 years later I find almost a quarter of the images worthy of the print.

The women one the link above was immediately worthy of a print and shown for a class assignment. It was not a stolen image as I communicated to her with a gesture that I was going to shoot her a gesture in return and a moment was created.     enjoy pjc
past the 140 character digital chains again but this is about the Seventies when there was a deep end to the gene pool. Reality/sarcasm/cynicism/optimism all in the blender to seek provoke communication. ART!

ChurchLightLebGreen-D-54-09-22Reflections of light or through light on this church wall.

Reflections have been a window beyond the surface for much of my creative life. Tomorrow night at my opening I’ll be reflecting back on many images, many periods from thirty eight years. Here is a preview from my performing arts work and a click on the image will lead you to more motion.

The person traveling the furthest will get a gift and there will be portrait discount cards passed out be part of my work. Post cards of the New England Shoreline, photo note cards and “All the Usual Subjects”.  Ask about the final Kodachrome series?

From Woodstock Nation to Freedom Fries See the USA in a Bailout ‘Vette

The Other Side Franklin Ave Norwich Ct

From the Summer of Love to this summer of_____ there is a lot to reflect on, “and it appears to be a long time” echos from forty years gone. There were songs of peace, but not sung by Richard Nixon and Dr. Strangelove who lives in Ct.

Walter Cronkite dies “The most trusted man in America” who do you trust now? George Clooney, Robin Williams, Mickey Hart, CBS is such an embarrassment! Once a leading source of news now something you watch for laughs when Jon Stewart reruns won’t do. “And that’s the way it sells.”

Forty years after Woodstock and Barbie Couric lead story is Michael Vick a story Amerikans can sink their teeth into. But alas the last story on August 14th was about tour buses arriving in “Woodstock” NY full of  tie dye tourists who “have got to get themselves back to the garden” or who sells more Woodstock trinkets Woodstock where the Festival wasn’t or Bethal where the festival was enquiring minds want to know?

To be fair and balanced Amerikas media is trash giving “We the consumers” what we want, lies, plastic, pollution, violence, sex, collateral damage and PROFIT!!!! dAH SAY DO YA WUNT fREEEDOM fRYS WIT DAT?

Blog has been down for a while so this is a long reflection many won’t read this far there has been so much to reflect on this August. But all for now got to go watch Bill O’Reilly on my i-phone.
