A Life in Photographic Art

Welcome and thank you to Molly Walsh riding shotgun on this journey.

For many years I have been told, working on, encouraged to create a second book. You might say I have been creating visual words for this publication since 1971. Now some 200,000 images later the publication begins takes shape.

new online-6 Shoe bench At 50-10 I was cruising along creating caring for my mom living forever. 50-11 changed that having my third near death experience I spent the next two years recovering. Mom dies and I struggle with the changes.  50-14 another disease and I move to Washington.

new online-8 bikeThe book on back burner my memory suffering concussions and comas will do that. Two years living out of boxes physically in Olympia but my soul is somewhere between Norwich, Willi, Coventry and here. 50-16 it is time health stable [sort of] I place an ad at Evergreen for an intern. Molly Walsh arrives. Smart, talented organized who laughs freely.

new online-11 H-C LilyAdd to her mix a love of Photography Film Photography! All images here are film the color is prints of negatives she made in the darkroom. All the images except the one below were made before we met.

new online-1 window 4thSome days we work on files organization she keeps me on point. I do have a tendency to distraction. Other days we wander shooting film. Discussing Photographic Philosophy, technique, seeing.  Seeing is what I teach, music, politics, smell and texture. The making of a photograph is made up of all these elements. Every image is a self portrait. I preach she knows. On a downtown stroll I saw this window and reflections I stop to shoot she steps a bit further and makes this negative. Reaching beyond the auto everything mode, presets on your hand held copy machine she creates Art a story is told.

bay-1 Molly Image for promoSo we begin the first step to publishing my Life in Photographic Art. A $2000 funding page. The first step. I am not a fan of internships. Good work deserves good pay. Much of this first wave of funding will be for her. The next wave is seeking a publisher, perhaps a sample chapter a very collectable perk. The journey continues with your help a book will be published. My life as a metaphor for the 50-16 years and beyond.  enjoy pjc

A Life in Photographic Art my second book

That cookie is as big as your face! No it isn’t grandpa. Come look in the mirror. A little smile a big bite on to the next adventure. The cookie is from Marconi’s on a visit there we stand in line we order Inara do you want a cookie? There is a rack on the counter way above her. Yes a chocolate one. There are chocolate chip, oatmeal in the rack I say they don’t have chocolate. “Yes grandpa in the basket” there by the cash register is a small basket with chocolate cookies high above her head? How she saw them no clue.

DSC_0002 S15 B-3 My cookie 8-27-15Lots happening images adventures over the end of Autumn. Moms birthday they pick me up as I get in the reports from the back seat begin. The pumpkins have rotted and the tops fell inside “Yep” there is a definitive way she says yes. A couple miles of updates, school friends etc. Lunch at Mekong 125 Columbia St NW Sticky Rice a bit of sugar. Maybe a taste of mommies and my lunch. A fortune cookie and off to the Capitol Dome to walk the stairs, ride elevators. Grandpa the door opened on the other side. Silly elevator trying to fool us laughing we go to another elevator and the door opens there’s mom. Off to the market. Getting out of the car I have a camera, camera bag, a bag of groceries, my coffee cup the Honda is low to the ground I struggle a bit with balance, Kirsten “You got all of it.” From behind me “Grandpa put the coffee cup in grocery bag.” Problem solved. She is sharp. We have a routine when I get out, I look over the seat and say See you later alligator. She says I’m a frog we laugh. Today I say see you later……..she waits for it a little smile eyes focused “frogigator” surprise her face lights up. Laughing she repeats frogigator. Walking up to my apt. I can hear her talking turning I look back her window open she hollers “see you later frogigator.” It is a new word, our word  our goodbye.

I am a proud grandparent I am amazed by her intelligence, compassion. My best friend Carl died on Halloween I got the call when Inara was visiting I start to cry immediately she is hugging comforting me empathy. I am a lucky man. Due to ankle problems I couldn’t go trick or treating with her a hug and a smile that’s ok grandpa get better.

Peace pjc

The Daily November 2nd

11.03.2015 by Peter J. Crowley // 2 Comments

The Daily well it won’t happen every day. The image may not be from that days images. So why The Daily, it sounds good LOL each day I shoot images with my Digital Nikon trying to learn how to optimize the quality of my images. Sometimes I’ll show these tests if they are fun, a good image and I can talk about what I tried to accomplish.

Today it is RED. I have found the most difficulty in creating images with lots of red. The problem has been separating the various densities without blocking up tones. today’s walk to the market provided my with this image. It was great to be able to wear shoes and walk for the first time since Wednesday.

DSC_0066 JPG Ss30 B-6 G-1 Brg Cnst 11-2-15This is right out of camera with shooting in Vivid +1 contrast  WB for shadow and +1 saturation. In PS I took out some blue and a bit of green. Minor contrast, and lighting. so to me it is okay but in my mind when I made the image I felt there was more separate red values. Opinions welcome.  enjoy pjc
