Now for Something Different

09.21.2010 by Peter J. Crowley // 4 Comments

Processed film today, Garden images were digital. The moment when you first look at the negatives is magic! Film is me, I am film. I enjoy the process the thought that goes before pushing the shutter. This is the journey I have traveled for nearly 40 years. This is the moment where it all comes together when I am speaking with my visual voice. Could be in the studio or on a stroll but mostly I know what I want to say and seek to express passion, my observations of life. Be it real or surreal.  enjoy pjc

A Providence Door

A Life in Photographic Art, Another Door Entered

In the early 80’s and in love I moved to Providence, while there I worked at RISD and Brown. One day meeting a friend who worked in RISD’s publications office for lunch I continued my life long series of doors. Posing Kate in the doorway and myself directly in front the series Layered life began. As we walked on to lunch Kate mentioned that the door was to Harry Callahan’s home. Thirty years later I still seek open doors and the humanity that lies within and I continue to ponder and reflect with compassion, in the view finder, my soul exposed in every subject.

You may look at lots of images but back in the pre artifiscal age and today still for me the decisive moment was not taken 1000 exposures per image to later photo shop and find your idea. Creativity came from within the viewfinder, the rectangle the mind. The little nuance of the two of us reflecting in the door knob were not a “happy accident” it was composition, creation. It was/is mine.

Photographic Art more doors, under Harry’s and here. Are the doors still open?

Frank Ballard

Frank Ballard takes a last look at the cast of The Pirates of Penzence before dress rehearsal.

As I entered the theater for this the final show Frank would direct at Uconn Frank saw me came down off the stage to greet me and see how I was, he had heard I had walking pneumonia. Concern, grace and humanity ….. There is not enough space on the internet to express what a great man Frank was and how blessed I was to know him.  I will miss him.                              enjoy pjc
