Whidbey Island Wa. Coupeville Harbor

03.26.2012 by Peter J. Crowley // 2 Comments

Summer of 2001 I taught Photo Philosophy on Whidbey Island. I joked that I would be teaching manual photography under the shadow of “Windows.” There were eight students all using film. Most I convinced to use manual one shot at a time. To see and think and see again as the camera sees. Learning to see and understand simplicity. I now own a digital camera [for quick color never decaffeinate] but use it on manual all the time yet it still makes adjustments I don’t want. I strive to make all the decisions, meter, compose in view finder almost never crop [this image is slightly cropped due to it being printed on post card paper] there is always an exception. One image at a time belongs to you. One hundred images blasted off in in a minute on auto everything belong to the camera. The decisive moment! My moment. My thoughts repeated, lived and not changing soon. LOL  My web designers spent a few hours last Wednesday figuring out some update problems on this word press site. As I post this morning I notice there are two more updates to add. Well I’ve rambled my thoughts on Photographic Art long enough. Look at the image, like it or not tell your friends.     enjoy pjc not updated in 25 years!

Whidbey Island Wa. Rain Forest

02.23.2012 by Peter J. Crowley // 1 Comment

After a week of teaching at the Coupeville Art Center on Whidbey Island Wa. one of my students and I went for a ride to explore more of the Island. This image is on the north end of the island near Deception Pass. Back light is a difficult situation especially if the foreground is deep green combined with with glowing underbrush in the background. With B+W film you can use a green filter which will lighten and separate the different shades of green. But the draw back here is you lose a couple stops of film speed. Here I used a mono pod that allowed me to shoot a couple stops slower on the shutter speed to make up the difference. Camera support is very useful in low light situations such as shooting under the canopy of the forest. A tripod would allow for much longer shutter speeds but when just strolling a mono pod is a lot easier to carry. enjoy pjc

The Studio 2004

What cha working on?

Yes the minions now much older. But the forecast remains the same.

A piece from a show that we worked together on. We worked and fantasized together on numerous shows, remember the plastic dog poop? Or the catapult of egg tempera paint.

Here from a June 2004 show is the post card Berta had me do a series of portraits to illustrate “My Own Voice” It was a great show. I am pretty sure I have a Berta portrait from almost all her shows. Someday I will print them all and perhaps we will have another show together? Berta, Kelly, Aaron enjoy your adventure. New London, and Norwich arts communities will miss you all. enjoy pjc
